PERSONAL SPACE, PLEASE
Harvard Graduate School of Design
Option Studio: Inherent Vice → Critic: Ken Smith → Fall 2016
Three consecutive projects focus on conflict between opposing characters.
In the video GET OUT OF MY FACE, two personalities must share a home, yet differing lifestyle choices result in a chase.
In ELBOWROOM, a distinction is made between object and container.
An enfilade attempts to confine follies, yet the animals resist their cages. Materiality expresses conflict, where a stretching of fabric defies the frame’s rigidity and redefines the container’s boundaries.
In SPACE INVASION, stubborn frameworks are tested on a site. When a three-dimensional grid imposes itself on an industrial landscape, existing oil tanks resist the invading structure by pushing it away. The grid’s columns and beams are displaced, superimposing a radial pattern on its preexisting right angles. The final form reveals this scene, and elevated catwalks allow users to witness the resulting tension from this series of operations.
